farm and go up to his room and hide, but he forced himself to work, turning his car down the road and toward the first of many fields he needed to inspect.
When it was time to pick up Robbie, he found himself parked outside the auditorium. Instead of waiting, he went inside and heard rich, full music drifting through the halls. Quietly, he cracked open one of the doors and slipped inside, sitting in one of the chairs in the dark portion of the auditorium.
His gaze went directly to Robbie, sitting in one of the front chairs, his violin under his chin, bow gliding back and forth over the strings. He didn’t know the piece they were playing, but he could immediately tell that Robbie enjoyed it. There was this rapturous look on the young musician’s face, and he found himself staring at him, watching every nuance, every movement he made.
The music came to an end, and Robbie’s expression relaxed, the violin lowered before resting on his lap. He knew the director was giving instructions, and he saw Arie, who was sitting next to Robbie, lean close and whisper something to him. Robbie didn’t 22

react, but Joey saw the expression on Arie’s face clearly, and he recognized it. Arie was in love with Robbie. He watched as Arie touched Robbie gently on the hand, stroking his skin. The gesture was as plain to Joey as Arie standing up and yelling to everyone that he was in love with Robbie.
Joey felt his stomach clutch in disappointment for a split second and release again. Joey had no claim on Robbie. Hell, he’d just met the man yesterday, so why was he feeling so let down? He thought he might have been jealous, but no, what he was feeling was more like general unfairness. Since his accident, people shied away from him when they first met him, but Robbie hadn’t, for obvious reasons.
A soft tapping reached his ears as the conductor tapped his baton. He watched as Robbie lifted his violin, and they began playing again. It didn’t take long for that rapturous look to overtake Robbie’s face again, and Joey found himself wondering what it would be like to put that look on Robbie’s face in another way. His imagination took off, and he began to picture what Robbie might look like laid out on his bed, smooth skin against his sheets, the man vibrating with excitement, that same rapturous look on his face as he came.
Joey stifled a soft moan and brought himself back to the here and now as the orchestra finished up the piece. Then he heard the conductor giving instructions again before dismissing the musicians.
Joey waited in the back of the auditorium and watched as Robbie lovingly packed up his instrument. It looked like Arie tried to guide Robbie off the stage, but Robbie seemed to shake him away before extending his cane and gingerly but unerringly making his way toward the stairs. Arie continued to hover, but Robbie made his way alone off the stage and up the aisle. Joey smiled and shook his head. The man was independent; he had to give him that.

Joey stood up, “Robbie.” He said the name softly, almost reverently, knowing he’d be heard.
“Did you hear us?” Robbie approached, following the sound of his voice.
“I sure did.”
“What did you think?”
“Beautiful.” As Joey said the word, he realized he was answering Robbie’s question and expressing what he thought of Robbie all at once. Joey stood up and Robbie reached for his arm.

As Joey led him out of the auditorium, he turned back toward the stage and shivered when he saw the look on Arie’s face. Venomous didn’t begin to describe it. As soon as Arie realized he was being watched, the look vanished. “I parked in the lot. I can get the car or we can walk.”
Robbie looked up at him, a smile on his face. “Let’s walk. I spend way too much time inside both cars and houses.” Joey led them outside and down the walk to the parking lot. “I have some things I need to do this afternoon.” He wasn’t quite sure how to ask what he wanted to. “Do you want to rehearse or something?”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” He stopped walking and stood in the middle of the walk, slipping his sunglasses on and tilting his face to the sun.

Joey watched Robbie soak up the sun’s warmth. “You know, there just might be. Have you ever planted a garden?” Robbie’s response was a deep laugh. “You have to be kidding.
I’ve never gotten my hands dirty except when I’ve fallen
