before I changed my mind about staying.
“Bloody gentlemen,” I muttered to myself and swung the other leg over the window sill before I climbed down.
Of course I would be back, but I liked the feeling of him longing for me and not knowing for sure when and if I would show up again. Perhaps I should stay away for a couple of weeks just to see his reaction , I thou ght, but I changed my mind. Or perhaps I would be back tomorrow night. Surely, he would never expect that …

I went to the window and saw him climb down the branches of ivy. I was most anx ious that he might fall, but he clim bed skilfully and quickly . It made me dizzy just to see the ground so far below . Three inches of snow would not soften the fall at all if he fell, but luckily, he reached the ground unharmed. He even did a small mock salute, which I returned, before he leap ed over the garden wall. I realized that I missed him already.
When I went back to my bed, I noticed something at the end of the windowsill. I left the bed and found the golden bracelet. Why did he leave that behind? I wondered, turning it over and over in my hands. It must have been worth a fortune for someone like him. Perhaps he wants to show me that he is not a thief after all? I pondered , looking out through the window over London ’s snow-covered roof tops. I fingered the golden bracelet absentminded ly . It felt a little bit warm under my touch. It did not matter that he had given it back. He was still a thief, I thought. First a stolen kiss, then he took my virtue, and now?
Now he has left with my heart as well …

    ~ About this story ~

I will admit that the general idea behind “A Gentleman’s Secret” which inspired me to write this novelette was the classic romance theme between characters from different social backgrou nds, like in “Romeo and Juliet ” by William Shakespeare. The story was also rather influenced by “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens as well as the more modern novel “Dora Damage” by Belinda Starling.
In February I spent one day in London, armed with a notebook and my camera, looking for inspiration and walked around in Hyde Park and Kensington. (If you like to you can see the pictures at my website.) When I saw the white terraced houses at Holland Park Avenue, I started to wonder how easy it would be to climb the ivy that covered some of the houses, and then that was when the story was born.
I did some research about the story, including spending an entire Sunday researching the developing of London’s plumbing system and hot water during the 19th century, Kenyan spears and shields, and the use and prescription of the opium-based laudanum (which was used for almost everything during those days).

I hope you enjoyed reading this story as much as I liked writing it!
