don't know how that happened," Walt said. "I'm just glad your name and reputation have been cleared. Your father would have expected no less from me."
"There is one final mystery that I can clear up," Scott Randolph said. "The man you discovered under those antique bottles was my great-grandfather, Silas Randolph, an agent of the Alcohol Tax Unit. A Revenuer, as they were called in those days.
"Dr. McAllister sent our DNA samples to a lab for analysis and the results confirm that we were related. She was also able to determine that he'd been shot in the back. We are assuming by Increase Boleyn or one of his confederates. We'll never know."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Scott," I said. How unsettling it must be to discover that your great-grandfather had been the victim of a murder.
"There will be no justice for my ancestor or for my family," Scott said, "since his murderers are dead now too, but there is a sense of closure. At least now we know how and why he disappeared. Why he never returned home to Georgia."
Melanie clapped her hands. "I think it's time for y'all to hear some good news. Ashley and I have an announcement. Crystal Lynne is selling the hunting lodge to me and Cam. Ashley and Jon are going to restore it for us. When it's finished, it will be spectacular. They are going to build a replicate of Pembroke Jones's Temple of Love on the estate. And the room with the fireplaces is going to be turned into a fabulous great hall, a perfect place for a wedding next Christmas."
Jon stood up and gave me a questioning look. I nodded my agreement. "A double wedding," he told everyone. He withdrew a small velvet box from his pocket. "Ashley, I was planning to give this to you at midnight. But we're among friends and family. They will all be happy for us."
I stood up next to him and wrapped my arm around his waist. He opened the box, revealing a sparkling diamond engagement ring. I lifted my left hand and he slipped it on my ring finger.
Everyone clapped and cheered. Then he kissed me and I forgot they were there.
