With nothing to lose, the owner tried this approach and found that people ate significantly faster.
When questioned after they ate about why they ate quickly, customers were unaware that the lights had been brightened. Surveys showed no dip in satisfaction. Turning over tables more quickly increased the number of customers coming through the restaurant, which increased profit for the owner.
On some nights, however, the restaurant’s waiting list was still problematically high. The owner again consulted with the team of psychologists. After watching for another few days, the consultants suggested a change in the music that was playing. Although the classical music that the owner was playing was soothing and conducive to the dining experience, it was slow in cadence. The psychologists suggested playing classical music with a quicker tempo. The subtle change of playing faster music, like the brightening of the lights, resulted in customers’ eating more quickly without decreasing their enjoyment.
The suggestions made by the team of psychologists are consistent with research findings across psychology showing that what people think, how they behave, how they feel, and, obviously, the speed with which they do things can all be altered by subtle shifts in the environment. What’s more, these behaviors can be altered without people even being aware of it.
Psychologically speaking, neural circuitry connects the eyes to the thinking part of the brain called the cortex (where thoughts register). Other circuitry bypasses the cortex and connects the eyes directly to the limbic system (where unconscious processes register). Dubbed the high road and the low road of mental processing, second-by-second processing of information includes both types of information going into the brain; some we’re aware of, but most we’re not.
The lesson here, and the key fact about human behavior, is that subtle fluctuations in the environment can unconsciously trigger psychological fluctuations in the individual. Many of our changes in mood, arousal levels, and feelings are triggered below the level of our awareness. The implications for golfers are tremendously important.
Although golfers do not face fluctuating lights and music, they nonetheless face all sorts of subtle fluctuations in their environment, including the people around them.
Have you ever wondered why star athletes and successful people travel with an entourage? In many cases the entourage is that person’s way of trying to take charge of the immediate surroundings. Think about it. Do you have certain people in your life who put you in a good mood? Do you have certain people in your life who make you feel good about yourself? Do you have certain people in your life who build your confidence? If you lived your life, as do most professional athletes, in an achievement domain in which positive feelings and confidence are of paramount importance, you’d understand why they want to surround themselves with such supporters.
One of the most consistent findings from social psychology is how various traits tend to travel through our social networks. In a study reported in the
New England Journal of Medicine
, even obesity travels through social networks. Researchers who conducted a study of over 12,000 participants concluded that a person’s chances of becoming obese increased by 57 percent if he or she had a friend who became obese in a given period. Similarly, if a person’s spouse became obese, the chances that he or she would also become obese increased by 37 percent (Christakis & Fowler 2007).
If obesity can travel through and across social networks, so can optimism, confidence, discipline, and work ethic. In fact, researchers who studied the lounges where schoolteachers take their breaks reported that teachers who spent time around other teachers who were critical of students became more critical themselves. Similarly, students who hang around with kids who do drugs are more likely to begin using drugs.
Now I know that in some situations you cannot select whom you partner with or whom you are paired with. Such circumstances are especially common as you climb the ladder of golfing success. PGA Tour players have their parings selected for them. The same holds true for most high-level amateur events and even high school and junior golf tournaments. But whenever you can determine the setting and company that you keep, opt for those who will nurture your best qualities,
