up hope. He → performed in pubs and clubs, and he always got good feedback and → favourable reviews. One day he heard about a competition. A → record label and a → TV station were looking for a new boy band to → record an album. The boy and hundreds of others → applied . The boy was lucky, he reached the final round.
But he didn’t win. The audience didn’t vote for him. There were others who weren’t better musicians, but who were better-looking. The four winners were brought together and turned into a boy band. The singer looked great, but he wasn’t very → talented. To begin with the band wasn’t successful. Then somebody from the record label remembered the other boy. From then on he was part of it all. They published his songs. He worked hard with the others at the studio. They paid him lots of money. But someone else became famous. Believe it or not, the boy was actually OK with that. Until the day when he got to know a wonderful girl. He → fell in love with her. He wrote poems for her …”
“Do you mean to tell me that this boy is you? And that you wrote the Electric Boys’ songs, and all Rico’s poems?”
“Not all the songs, but all the poems – as a ghost writer, so to speak”, sagt er mit Leidensmiene und sieht mich dabei so komisch an.
“And how does the story go on?”
“That’s not for me to decide”, fährt er fort.
    “What does that mean?”
“We’ve already agreed that I’ll → drop out of the band. In the autumn I start studying music at college in London. I earned a lot of money in a short time, which means I don’t have to worry about → financing my → studies . And I’ll only make music I like from now on.”
    “Were you Rico’s voice too?”
“No, no, Rico’s voice is okay.” Er lacht eine Spur zu schrill. “I wasn’t his ghost singer as well.”
“I’d like to go somewhere else”, sage ich.
    “Where to?”
“Perhaps outside, to get some fresh air”, sage ich.
Draußen ist es noch immer angenehm warm. Wir laufen nebeneinander her.
“I’m very glad that you don’t think I’m a cheat any more”, sagt er. “Or do you have any → doubts about my story?”
“I believe every word of it, my poet.”
“Thanks. That’s really nice of you … Amelie, when are you coming to London?”
“Soon, very soon”, antworte ich. “The exact date isn’t → fixed yet. Will we meet in London from time to time?”
“Of course. As often as you like.”
“What will happen to the Electric Boys when you aren’t writing their songs any longer?”
“They’ll → break up . This autumn. But it would have happened anyway, even if I hadn’t left the band. Rico is planning a → career as soloist. John wants to study in America. Pete and Tony are more into soul music – they’re going to start their own band.”
Wir setzen uns auf eine Bank und
